Sleep disturbance in Asthma and Allergic Rhinitis

31 Jan 2014

During the latest American Thoracic Society (ATS) annual conference in Philadelphia, the impact of sleep on Paediatric asthma (PA) was discussed (21.5.13). Delayed onset of sleep, cough and fragmented sleep pattern is common in PA and Allergic Rhinitis(RA). 80% of children require rescue treatment (ie. bronchodilators like salbutamol), which is distinct from daytime asthma exacerbations. Inhaled corticosteroids are beneficial in decreasing the usage of night time rescue treatment. Unless treated and prevented, these symptoms may effect the daytime activities, quality of life and school performance.
